Where you come from
Ten ways to arrive
Every character starts from one of ten backgrounds: a few lines about where you come from, and the clothes you arrive in. The rest you write yourself when you make the character: a name, a face from the game’s own parts, a description others read when they look you over, and, if you like, a backstory only staff read.
Men and women can be played. A background is a starting point, not a class: what you become is up to you.
- I
Born in Kuttenberg
You grew up between the mine shafts and the market, in a craftsman's household of the king's silver town. You know its streets, its taverns, and whom to avoid.
Arrives inA plain shirt, hose and town shoes - II
Miner from the German lands
Like many before you, you came over the mountains from Meissen for Kuttenberg's silver, which pays better than home. The miners' talk comes easier to you than the speech of the villages.
Arrives inA miner's hood, a smock and a leather apron - III
Village born
You were born in one of the villages around Kuttenberg and have worked a lord's fields since you could walk. Now you want more than the furrow.
Arrives inA linen smock, a straw hat and worn shoes - IV
Runaway
You left your lord's land elsewhere in Bohemia without his leave. Nobody here knows your face yet, and you would like to keep it that way.
Arrives inPatched clothes and a hood - V
Soldier without a war
You fought for whoever paid in the troubles of the last two years and walked away when the pay stopped. You know how to hold a spear, and little else.
Arrives inA worn padded jacket and boots; no weapon - VI
Driven out by the war
Raiders burned your village in Sigismund's war. You came to Kuttenberg with what you could carry, which was not much.
Arrives inA torn shirt and rag-wrapped feet - VII
Journeyman
You learned a trade in another town and travel to find a master who will take you on, or a town that needs your hands.
Arrives inA travelling coat and a cap - VIII
Pilgrim to Sedletz
You came to pray at the great church of the Cistercians at Sedletz, and stayed. Perhaps the monks will take you in; perhaps the town will.
Arrives inA pilgrim's cloak and hat - IX
Carter's hand from Prague
You came with a merchant's wagons from Prague and decided not to go back. You know the roads, the inns along them and the price of things.
Arrives inTravelling clothes and a short cloak - X
Forest folk
You grew up among charcoal burners and woodcutters, far from any church bell. Towns are loud, but they pay.
Arrives inA hooded tunic and rough boots
